The Role Of Rehabilitation In A Disability Insurance Claim

2011-08-02

Illness and injury are unavoidable risks of everyday life, but they shouldn't affect your ability to earn a steady income. Sometimes people become sick or get injured and it prevents them from returning to work to earn the money they desperately need. Fortunately, there is disability insurance available that can help these people when they need it the most. Disability insurance provides for your earned income in case you get an illness or are injured enough that you can't return to work for a matter of weeks or months. However, there are certain steps that need to be followed in order for your disability insurance claim to continue working to your benefit. One of the important factors in a disability insurance claim happens to be disability rehabilitation. Find out why disability rehabilitation is important to your claim here.

When you file a claim for disability, chances are you have fallen victim to an illness that will ultimately prevent you from returning to work for longer than seven calendar days. However, sometimes it is an accident that caused an injury that will prevent you from going back to work for a while. If it is the latter, then rehabilitation may be in order. The reason you'll have to go through rehabilitation is that both the employer and the insurance provider need to see that you're taking steps to get better and may return to work at some point.

Initially, when you file a claim, you'll need to submit a "Doctor's Certification" which essentially spells out what injury or illness you have and how long the doctor suggests you be out to recuperate. Depending on the notes the doctor makes, your employer and/or insurance provider may ask that you do some recovery exercises or rehabilitation in order to get back into the workforce as quickly as possible. Oftentimes, the doctor will actually recommend this when they sign the certification so that your employer and insurance provider know whether or not you'll be able to go back to work and the estimated date of that return.

Rehabilitation is a good thing whether or not your disability insurance claim depends on it. It will keep you active and keep your body working toward recovery. An inactive body is less likely to recover quickly. Employers like to see their employees back to work as fast as possible and as healthy as possible.

Find out what your employer's or insurance provider's policies are on rehabilitation. You should know when rehabilitation is pertinent and in what cases. Also, find out from your doctor how long your rehabilitation will be and when it will start.
