Social Insurance Programs And Their Link To Disability Insurance

Social insurance programs are government sponsored and linked with disability insurance. Two well known social insurance programs in the United States are social security and Medicare. The defining characteristics of these social insurance programs are that they are programs in which the government provides people with benefits because they are required to do so by law. Social insurance programs are funded by taxes and premium payments which are subsidized and are paid by participants. These programs are designed to be affordable so that there are a high number of active participants.
Disability insurance is an insurance policy that provides income for people with disabilities. Disability insurance can be provided for both short term and long term disabilities. The most well known forms of disability insurance are worker's compensation, which is when someone is paid income for being injured while at work and disability insurance that is provided by the government. Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income are both programs designed to provide income for the disabled and they are funded by the government. These programs are similar to social insurance programs in that they are all benefits provided by the government for people in need of help.
Programs like these require that the person be evaluated to make sure that they qualify to receive disability benefits. In order to be a qualifying participant of SSDI, you must provide evidence that your disability inhibits your ability to work. Most people with disability insurance participate in social insurance programs. Many people who receive SSI benefits are on Medicare and other government funded programs which help them pay for things like prescriptions and other health expenses. For this reason social insurance is commonly linked with disability insurance and those who qualify are able to take advantage of all resources that are available for them.
The process of getting into one of these programs is quite lengthy and there is an extensive waiting period for acceptance into both SSDI and SSI. SSI provides a person with supplemental income and a person that is enrolled in the program is limited to only receive a small amount of other income. These programs are extremely helpful and are designed to only be used by people who absolutely need it. Many people are seriously hurt or have been disabled since they were children and they can be helped by these programs and live financially independent lives, while receiving the medical care and attention they need. Since this is a government funded program, these individuals are monitored so that only people truly in need of these social programs and services are receiving benefits.
